Pink Lily
I chose to focus on a very small part of the definition of Environment for my piece.   My "personal micro-environment" is the place where I live, the skin I inhabit, and the things that I choose to bring into my life.  One of the important  components of that microcosm is my garden.  It is my refuge in summer, my sustenance in fall, and my anticipated joy in winter.  It is a source of food for my family, and a source of beauty for all who visit my home.  Even in January, when it is covered in snow and piled with compost, it is still beautiful to me.  The flowers that line the vegetable beds serve two purposes.  First, they hide some of the inner workings of the garden and make it "pretty" even when the plants are dying, and second, they are cut and brought inside.

This quilt was inspired by a photograph of an exotic pink lilly, whose veined petals created engaging lines and interesting patterns.  The grey fabric is a gorgeous single piece of hand dyed cotton from Laura Wasilowski, and it was very hard for me to cut it up.  At least I know I can always get more!  The pink slivers are also a special fabric which I bought in an antique store in Petaluma, CA.  The vintage fabric is lovely and has been in my stash for at least ten years, just waiting for the right quilt.

This piece will also be featured in an exhibit at Yale University's Haskin's Laboratory Gallery as part of a photographic/quilt exhibit entitled "Double-Take" in two weeks.  More about that on my personal blog soon.
